The votes are in! Norfolk Kitchen & Bath has compiled a list of the top 2019 kitchen design trends. Incorporating some of these design trends into your project is a great way to ensure that your kitchen is on par with a majority of today’s kitchens, which is especially important if you plan to sell in the near future.
Kitchen Design Trend: Simple Over Ornate
One of the top 2019 kitchen trends is the use of clean, modern lines. The ornate, decorative cabinets of yesteryear are out, with many homeowners preferring the simplicity of a shaker or slab cabinet door and linear hardware.
To add some visual interest without compromising the simple look, many homeowners elect to add glass cabinet doors or open shelving to their kitchen design. These elements give a more “open” feel to the space, without taking away from the amount of storage in the design.
Storage, Storage & More Storage
Cabinet makers have come up with many ingenious storage solutions to get the clutter out of your kitchen. The use effective storage solutions, such as pull out waste cabinets, pull out drawers, lazy susans, cutlery drawers, spice cabinets, pots & pans drawers, and pantries facilitate the “simple” kitchen trend, allowing homeowners to hide more things inside the cabinet rather than on the counter. To prevent adding thousands to your kitchen cost, you should examine how you use your kitchen and select only the kitchen accessories that you find useful. The possibilities are endless!
Whites, Grays & Pops of Color
While whites & grays are still the primary color choices for kitchen cabinets, pops of color are beginning to trickle back into kitchen design. At the national Kitchen & Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas, many of the kitchen displays featured color, whether it was in the cabinets, the hardware or even the appliances. Moody colors such as blue, plum, emerald & black are expected to make a resurgence in the coming years.
Quartz Breaks Through
After spending many years catching up to granite’s stronghold, engineered quartz countertops have successfully overtaken granite as the most popular countertop material, with Houzz reporting over 48% of homeowners choosing the material for their kitchen design. This has been a steady increase over the last 3 years (43% in 2018, 41% in 2017), as opposed to granite’s steady decline in the same period (40% in 2017, 34% in 2018, 30% in 2019). Expect the popularity of quartz to continue its steady incline over the next few years.
A new kitchen trend is the use of matte finishes over the traditional polished finish. Matte, or honed finish, is a smooth, soft finish without the shine of a polished countertop. Another option is a leathered finish, which is a textured matte finish. Add some dimension to your kitchen design with one of these contemporary options.
Mixing & Matching In Kitchen Design
Mixing and matching your hardware finishes is another trendy way to add some dimension to your kitchen design. In previous years, matching your faucets and your lighting to your cabinet knobs and pulls was important. Now, homeowners are mixing brushed nickel with oil rubbed bronze, or brushed brass (gold) with matte black, etc. Some even choose to create an accent piece with a copper hood or sink. While hardware groups (cabinet knobs, faucets, appliances, lighting) should always have the same finish, feel free to use multiple different finishes throughout your kitchen design.
Black Stainless Appliances
While stainless steel appliances still dominate the market, black stainless appliances are an up-and-coming kitchen trend. Black stainless appliances have a luxurious, high end feel to them as opposed to the traditional stainless steel. If you aren’t ready to make a bold color choice, consider incorporating these classy black appliances into your new kitchen.
