7 Popular Kitchen Design Trends In 2023
Now that we are a few months into 2023, and the annual National Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) has ended, kitchen designers are getting a sense of what design elements will be popular this year. While open concept layouts and white kitchens remain, some other trends might surprise you! Here are 7 of the top kitchen design trends for 2023.
Design Trend #1: Organic Design Elements
The past few years have been all about bringing nature inside your home, and 2023 continues that trend. Expect to see wood cabinetry in light to medium tones make a comeback, as opposed to the all-painted kitchens we have been seeing over the last 5 years. Many homeowners are using these wood tones in accent pieces rather than their whole kitchen. Think shelving, islands, and decorative hoods.
Other organic colors, such as coastal blues & forest greens, are expected to increase in popularity in 2023. While white cabinets aren’t going anywhere, gone are the days of the all-white kitchen. Instead, you may notice more two-tone kitchen designs, featuring white cabinetry and one of the trending colors.
#2: Bold Is Beautiful
While full-color kitchens are a little too trendy for most homeowners, designers are finding unique ways to incorporate color into kitchen designs. Colored appliances, brightly colored tile and bold countertop veining are just some of the ways clients are expressing their unique style. These elements are easy enough to change, meaning your kitchen is always on trend. Check out Samsung Bespoke, Viking Delta Hues, or other appliance manufacturers for current color options.
Still prefer the neutral whites and grays? Homeowners with white kitchens have begun adding stone slab backsplashes to their kitchen designs. It adds a beautiful, bold focal point to your kitchen design without the addition of too much color. It’s the best of both worlds!
Design Trend #3: Minimalist Design
Minimalist styles are dominating the kitchen design industry. That means: simple cabinet door styles, less ornate decorations (corbels, furniture legs, etc.) and, in some cases, even less wall cabinetry. Instead of wall cabinets, some homeowners choose to add open shelving – creating a brighter, more open space.
Minimalist does not mean simple, however. In fact, many clients are gravitating towards storage solutions that help to “minimize” the clutter in their kitchen. Coffee and beverage stations, appliance garages, charging drawers, butler’s pantries, concealed pantries (hidden behind a matching cabinet door), and others. Which brings us to our next kitchen design trend.
Design Trend #4 Custom-Built Organization
Think about it – a new kitchen, tailor-made to your family’s needs. Customization is one of the hottest kitchen design trends in today’s kitchens. The options are nearly endless, from spice drawers to pantry cabinets, mixer lifts, wine racks, floating shelves, and many more.
Design Trend #5: Sustainability
Going green never goes out of style. With inflation driving energy costs through the roof, things like LED lighting and energy-star appliances are more popular than ever before. Other efforts to support sustainability include natural lighting via Low-E windows and doors, VOC-free paints and stains, pull-out recycling bins, and naturally sourced countertops like quartzite, granite, and marble.
#6: Combining Kitchen & Dining
Open concept kitchens have been a trend for many years, and 2023 is no different. As a result, the kitchen has become a hub for many busy families. Cooking, dining, entertaining, homework – any kitchen design must fulfill a variety of needs. To create more space to fill these needs, many clients have forgone the traditional dining room or kitchen table, investing in large, multipurpose islands instead.
Doubling Up for Efficiency
Seeing double? You aren’t alone. With more family members staying in and working from home, homeowners are doubling up on sinks, refrigerators, and dishwashers in their kitchen design, to account for the extra activity. Even dual kitchen islands – one for cooking and meal prep and the other for dining and activities, are gaining in popularity.
#7: Smart Technology
Technology continues to advance, and so do smart options for your new kitchen. Smart options include: Wi-Fi-enabled appliances, touchless faucets, device charging stations, smartphone-controlled lighting, and more. Expect this trend to continue to rise now and into the foreseeable future.
