2022 Kitchen Design Trends

2022 kitchen design trends have been heavily influenced by side effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as spending a lot of time at home, whether working, cooking, or spending time with family. With that in mind, the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) has compiled a list of the top kitchen design trends, based on input from designers, architects, contractors, manufacturers, & more industry experts.

Kitchen Design Trend 1: Nature-Inspired Color Schemes

Nature-inspired themes drive the majority of 2022 kitchen design trends. While white & gray remain popular neutral cabinet colors, the days of all-white or all-gray kitchens are numbered, making way for warmer, nature-inspired hues, such as blue, green, and light to medium wood tones. Kitchen designers are already seeing many two-toned kitchens featuring different combination of these trendy color options.

When it comes to hardware & fixtures, expect a shift towards matte & brushed finishes, such as brushed brass (gold) or matte black.

2. A Multi-Functional Kitchen Design

A continued trend from previous years, which has only been reinforced due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is the desire for the kitchen to be used as a multipurpose space, rather than just for food prep. We are now living in our homes more than ever before, and the kitchen is being used for a variety of things, from entertainment hubs to homework spaces. Open concept layouts, large islands that function as prep/dining/work spaces, pantries with wine or coffee stations, and multi-functional cabinet upgrades will be popular options in 2022 kitchen design.

Kitchen Design Trend 3: Aging-In-Place

Many homeowners are focused on how their kitchen space will serve not only their current needs, but their future needs as well. A kitchen design, for those who wish to age-in-place, includes accessibility changes such as: Pull-out shelving, increased walkway clearances, lowered microwaves, shallower sinks, raised dishwashers & more. We expect to see an increased demand for a functional, universal kitchen design as the Baby Boomer generation begins to head out of the workforce & into retirement.

4. Clean, Minimalist Kitchen Design

Another by-product of the pandemic is the increased desire for a sanitary home base, which includes the multi-purpose kitchen. To make things easier to clean properly, we expect customers to trend towards a simpler door style (think: shaker or slab panel), touch-free fixtures, and non-porous countertops like quartz or porcelain. Full-height stone backsplashes are another popular 2022 kitchen design trend, adding a bold statement while eliminating those hard-to-clean grout lines.

Kitchen Design Trend 5: Integrated Technology

Did you know that, according to the NKBA, 30% of all kitchen projects already incorporate some integrated technology? We will continue to see an upward trend of smart appliances used in kitchen design as manufactures continue to develop and improve their AI technology. Products like the Samsung Family Hub, Alexa, & Google can take appliances beyond their basic functions, with abilities like managing schedules, making grocery lists, playing music, streaming, viewing recipes, and more.
