Islands or Peninsulas?

One debate that might be had in your home during a kitchen renovation is deciding between between an island or a peninsula. When you are in the midst of a kitchen remodel, you might find there isn’t a universal answer, but there is definitely an answer that works better for your space. Norfolk Kitchen & Bath loves working with clients in creating a great kitchen design for their home, and often go over the benefits for both options.

Islands

Gives you additional space. Very useful for both storage and workspace, islands help keep you organized and can offer an alternative layout to a more traditional kitchen design. Placing a sink or appliances in your island can free up your other counters for more must-haves.

Can serve multiple purposes. One of the great parts about an island is it exactly what you make of it. If you need additional seating, consider adding a bar with stools, or place your stovetop in the center to become a focal point.

Gives space for people to gather. Many islands are created as a place for people to sit and talk. This allows for the host to be apart of the conversation without the fear of guests being in the way as they move around and complete the meal.

It allows for great flow. When a kitchen is designed around an island well, it accommodates your usual workflow. The circular effect of an island allows a homeowner to move freely while utilizing the extra cooking space.

Peninsulas

Create a subtle divide between living spaces. Whether it is a divide for your dining room, living room, or another area of your house, a peninsula creates a distinct, but beautiful separation between two rooms.

It opens up your home. Just as a peninsula allows for separation, it also allows your spaces to coexist without additional walls. This is especially great when working with smaller homes or rooms without great natural light.

Great for space efficiency. Sometimes, you just don’t have the room for an island in your kitchen, but the additional storage and counter space is a necessity. Peninsulas give you an opportunity for the best of both worlds without making your kitchen feel small or cramped.

Allows for additional seating. Using one side of your peninsula for prep space and the other as a bar for stools works similarly as an island. You’re creating spaces for people to gather that will not disrupt you while you cook.
